Ingredient Spotlight: Monk Fruit

Grown in the highlands of Southern China, monk fruit is a small green melon said to be named after Buddhist monks who grew the fruit centuries ago. Those familiar with traditional Chinese medicine know that monk fruit, also known as Momordica grosvenori (Luo Han Guo), has many health benefits.

In 2016, we discovered this amazing fruit completely by chance. Brewed into a hot tea, we tried it, and after taking the first sip, we were surprised to learn that there was no sugar added as the drink tasted sweet. After doing our research and learning more about this fruit, it turns out that the extract from dried monk fruit is 200 times sweeter than cane sugar, has zero calories or carbs, and has a low glycemic index. And, unlike other non-nutritive sweeteners, monk fruit does not have any known side effects. In fact, in 2011 a study was conducted in the United States and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry which found that the anti-inflammatory properties of monk fruit could help prevent cancer and keep blood sugar levels in check.

When it came to crafting our zero sugar flavor, we knew that we had to use monk fruit. However, monk fruit is an expensive ingredient that is not commonly found outside of Asia. After working with various suppliers, we found a reputable monk fruit supplier who works directly with farmers ensuring that sustainable growing practices are used in the farming of the monk fruit used in 4 Purpose Energy drinks.

To balance the monk fruit contained in the new zero sugar Blackberry Peach flavor, we developed a proprietary sweetening blend of organic stevia and organic erythritol to perfect the drink’s sweetness profile. If you haven’t tried this new refreshing, 5 calorie, Blackberry Peach organic energy drink flavor, we highly recommend it! Taste the difference today, order your 24-count case here.
